Implementation of international humanitarian law (hereinafter referred to as «IHL») in Ukraine, the organization of humanitarian assistance to victims of the Russian-Ukrainian war in the East of Ukraine and other important issues were discussed by the Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs, Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons of Ukraine on European Integration Oleksii Ilyashenko  and Head of the Mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross (hereinafter referred to as «ICRC») in Ukraine Florence Gillett.

«The effective use of international humanitarian law instruments for the human safety during the war in the East of Ukraine and those who are forced to live in the temporarily occupied territory remains one of the priorities of the Ministry», ‒ emphasized Oleksii Ilyashenko. He expressed his gratitude to the ICRC for the continued assistance to the citizens of Ukraine who suffered from the armed aggression of the Russian Federation.

Florence Gillett assured continued support of Ukraine and noted that the ICRC is an impartial and independent humanitarian organization that works to protect the lives and dignity of people affected by armed aggression and other forms of violence, as well as to assist the most vulnerable sectors of the population in overcoming economic difficulties.

«The International Committee of the Red Cross is making every effort to prevent human suffering in Ukraine, and its mission is to disseminate and strengthen humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles,» ‒ noted Florence Gillett, Head of the Mission of the ICRC in Ukraine.

Both Parties agreed on the need to intensify the work of the Interdepartmental Commission on the application and implementation of international humanitarian law in Ukraine - an advisory body operating under the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, and to strengthen intergovernmental communications in this direction.

During the meeting, the participation of the Ministry in a number of international events on the implementation of IHL was also discussed, in particular on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions of 1949, co-organized by the ICRC. Declared topics of such events are legal regulation, protection of cultural heritage, restoration of ties and search for missing persons.
