IT IS NECESSARY TO START THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COMMISSION ON ISSUES OF MISSING PERSONS

The priorities of the Ministry for Veterans Affairs in the application of international humanitarian law in Ukraine in 2020 were discussed during a meeting of the Deputy Minister for Veterans Affairs, Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons of Ukraine for European Integration Oleksii Illiashenko with representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ukraine (hereinafter referred to as «ICRC») - Head of Operations, Roberto Petronio and Legal Coordinator Mariana Chacon.

First of all, it was about the resumption of the activities of the Interdepartmental Commission on the Application and Implementation of International Humanitarian Law in Ukraine in connection with the adoption of amendments to its composition at a Government meeting on December 11, 2019.

Oleksii Illiashenko noted that one of the main tasks of the Ministry is the formation and implementation of state policy in the field of application of international humanitarian law in Ukraine.

Representatives of the ICRC assured of their further cooperation and spoke about the assistance that the organization can offer within the framework of its mandate for the successful implementation of relevant activities.

In particular, the parties discussed the algorithm and prospects for launching the work of the Commission on the issues of missing persons in special circumstances and on the establishment of an appropriate Register.

«The Ministry for Veterans Affairs supports the idea of starting as soon as possible the work of the Commission on the issues of missing persons in Special Circumstances in order to ensure coordination of the activities of state bodies authorized to account and / or search for missing persons», ‒ emphasized Oleksii Illiashenko Deputy Minister for European Integration.

Also, during the meeting, specialists from the Ministry provided clarifications to the ICRC representatives on changes to the List of international humanitarian organizations, for which a simplified procedure for crossing the contact line will be ensured.
