THE DEPUTY MINISTER FOR VETERANS AFFAIRS OCCASIONALLY REMINDED REPRESENTATIVES OF RUSSIAN FEDERATION THAT CRIMEA IS UKRAINE
Application and implementation of international humanitarian law (hereinafter referred to as «IHL») in the world and in Ukraine in particular was studied by representatives of 10 countries participating in the Seventh Regional Seminar on the implementation of IHL in Minsk, which was attended by the Deputy Minister for Veterans Affairs, Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons of Ukraine on European Integration Oleksii Ilyashenko.
Participants to the seminar paid a lot of attention to the relevance of the Geneva Conventions in the context of global world transformations, which this year marks 70 years since its adoption.
The delegations concluded that in recent years disregard by some States of certain IHL norms, which may lead to the loss of the achievements of the international community in protecting human rights that have been gained due to the overcoming of consequences of World War II. The speakers gave examples of events in the Middle East, the Persian Gulf and the like.
During the discussion, Deputy Minister on European Integration Oleksii Ilyashenko emphasized that one of such violators is the Russian Federation , that attempted to annex the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and for the sixth consecutive year, carrying out military aggression in Donbas. Responding to remark from the Russian delegation about so-called «peaceful referendum», Oleksii Ilyashenko strongly affirmed that referendums under rifles of «green suiters» is a blatant violation of international law, in particular IHL, and the whole civilized world is confident that Crimea is Ukraine.
During the seminar, a lot of attention was paid to legal issues and future challenges regarding the means of warfare, including the investigation of war crimes, the protection of cultural heritage, mechanisms to prevent separation of families during the war, the restoration of ties and investigation of whereabouts, as well as the search of missing persons.
«The Ministry for Veterans Affairs directs its efforts to promote the effective use of instruments of international humanitarian law for the safety of people, respect for the dignity during the war in the East of Ukraine. Compliance with the norms and requirements of international humanitarian law is necessary at all levels, by all participants to the process», ‒ said Oleksii Ilyashenko.
The Seventh Regional Workshop on the Implementation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) was co-organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
