Launch of Water Purification Installation, Renovation of Medical Facilities, Housing for IDPs – Results of Visit of Minister Vadym Chernysh to Mariupol

Today in Mariupol Minister for temporarily occupied territories and IDPs Vadym Chernysh, US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch and Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko solemnly opened an experimental water purification installation based on Starokrymska filter station of CE “Voda Donbasu” company. The experimental installation is mounted on the site of the Starokrymska filter station and is designed to reduce and correct water salinity.

The experimental installation has a number of advantages, namely: low energy consumption, absence of noise and vibration, easy adjustment of operating parameters, and most importantly – the reception of drinking water with a given salt content.

US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch solemnly handed over the first samples of drinking water purified by the experimental installation to Minister V. Chernysh, and Mariupol Mayor V. Boychenko. In the long run, the city will be able to consume purified water that meets all standards without interruptions.

“Water supplied to each apartment in Mariupol comes from Siverskyi Donets river, which crosses the contact line several times. In the light of the conflict Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts infrastructure is not in the best condition. Many important infrastructure objects are damaged, which in turn prevents the restoration or improvement of the water supply system in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, which results in deterioration of water quality and increased costs. UAH 1.8 billion were allocated from national budget to solve problems of CE “Voda Donbasu”, which supplies water for dozens of cities on both sides of the contact line in Donetsk oblast. Mariupol is at the very end of water supply chain. Maintaining water supply of the city is the result of co-operation between the Government of Ukraine, local authorities and international partners. The installation of an experimental water purification installation on the site of the Starokrymska filter station is, first of all, a reduction in the level of costs that is economically beneficial to the community,” says Vadym Chernysh.

During his visit Minister V. Chernysh visited Mariupol City Medical Hospital (Cardio-Surgical Center).

Only in 2018 the Center treated and operated on 71 internally displaced persons. Also, people from the temporarily occupied territories visit the hospital. Currently the hospital has modern medical equipment: angiographic installation, Z-5 sensor ultrasound, Mylab Seven ultrasound, lung ventilator, etc.

“The most important is the fact that Ukrainian hospitals do not only treat internally displaced persons, but also people from the occupied territories. Such approaches form the necessary conditions for integration processes in the community”, – said the Minister.

V. Chernysh also visited Mariupol Children’s Diagnostic Center of «Health of the Child and Woman” local medical facility.

In early June 2018, under MTOT coordination Government of Switzerland delivered humanitarian supplies in form of medical equipment to Mariupol Children’s Diagnostic Center.

To improve the quality of services USD 18.7 million allocated for major repairs of Children’s Diagnostic Center from Mariupol budget USD 10.5 million is for the repairs, UAH 8.2 million is to purchase modern equipment for specialist offices, pediatrician specialists, physiotherapy and functional diagnostics.

MTOT continues to take care of housing for internally displaced persons. The city authorities of Mariupol also pay a lot of attention to this issue. For this reason, the Minister visited a hostel where almost all works were completed and dozens of “new Mariupol locals” – internally displaced persons – will soon move in. Reconstruction of a two-storey hostel was conducted during the year under the program of co-financing: UAH 15 million were allocated from national budget, more than UAH 20 million – from the city budget.
